Five STEM activities you can run at home with zero special equipment

You don't need a lab to build the habit of asking, building, and testing. Five kitchen-table activities, each mapped to the concept it secretly teaches.

The most valuable thing a parent can build isn't a project — it's the reflex of asking 'what happens if…?' and finding out. These five activities need nothing beyond a kitchen and patience.

The activities

Paper bridge challenge: one sheet of paper, two books, and a question — how many coins can it hold? Folding is engineering. Ice rescue: free a toy from ice using salt, water, and sunlight; that's thermodynamics. Kitchen chromatography: a coffee filter and a marker reveal that black ink isn't black.

Pattern hunt: sort the sock drawer by three different rules — that's computational thinking without a screen. Seed race: two seeds, two windowsills, one variable changed. Congratulations, you've run a controlled experiment.

The one rule

Resist explaining the answer before the child has a guess. The guess — right or wrong — is the moment the learning attaches to. Ask, build, test, explain: the loop is the lesson.
